The Mental Gymnastics of Football Manager: Why Restrictive Benches & Convoluted Formats Drain My Battery
A deep dive into how 9-man bench limits and points-halving playoff formats drain my executive function, and how database mods for FM24 & FM26 restore my sanity.
Football Manager is my ultimate ADHD dopamine goldmine, mostly because I love seeing youth players evolve. But restrictive bench sizes and convoluted playoff systems kill that joy and drain my executive function fast. This is how I use custom database mods in FM24 and FM26 to eliminate the pointless friction and just get back to playing the game.
Football Manager is my undisputed holy grail for dopamine. When I’m deep in a long-term save (scouting obscure 15-year-olds in South America, obsessing over half-space overlaps, and watching young prospects slowly evolve into world-class superstars), I can easily lock in for eight hours straight without realizing I completely forgot to eat dinner.
But for my specific ADHD brain, Football Manager has a massive hidden trap: Friction.
When a complex simulation asks me to make hundreds of micro-decisions per session, small systemic design annoyances don’t just mildly irritate me: they compound until my brain blue-screens.
Now, let’s be clear: the infamous Restartitis (the urge to abandon a save file) isn’t usually caused by bad UI. That happens because the game eventually becomes too easy, trapping me in an internal conflict between leaving the club I painstakingly built up versus chasing the shiny new dopamine hit of a brand new challenge. (Note: I’ll be doing a separate deep dive on how I personally combat Restartitis and keep saves alive in a future article!)
But long before I reach that late-game crisis, there is a silent killer that ruins my day-to-day experience: Pointless Admin Work. These are the bottlenecks that turn a fun matchday into a frustrating chore and drain my mental battery while I’m just trying to develop my team.
Here is a breakdown of the two biggest mental roadblocks I experience in FM (pre-match bench constraints and momentum-killing league formats) and how my custom mods for both FM24 and FM26 finally fix them.
Friction Bottleneck 1: The 7 & 9-Man Bench Problem
The tactics are dialed in. The opposition scout report is processed. I am eager to click Submit Team and dive straight into the match engine.
Then the red warning box flashes on my screen: You have selected too many substitutes. I am locked into a restrictive 7 or 9-man bench.
[Match Motivation High] -> [Pick 11 Starters] -> [HIT 9-MAN BENCH WALL] -> [Frustration] -> [Mental Fatigue Before Kickoff]
The Mental Gymnastics of Squad Selection
Maybe for other players, trimming a bench is a fun little tactical puzzle. But for me, wrestling with my working memory and executive function, it triggers immediate decision paralysis.
Modern football allows 5 substitutions in 3 windows. But when a domestic league restricts me to only 7 or 9 bench seats, my math for tactical contingency breaks down completely:
“I need a backup goalkeeper (1). A backup center-back (2). A fullback who can cover both flanks (3). A defensive anchor (4). A box-to-box midfielder (5). A wide creator (6). A backup striker (7)…”
My bench is now 100% full before I have made a single luxury choice. I am now stuck in an agonizing mental loop:
- The Wonderkid Guilt Trip: Do I drop my reliable defensive mid just so my 17-year-old high-potential wonderkid can sit on the bench and get some valuable minutes? (Seeing youth players evolve is literally my main motivation in the game!)
- The ‘Plan B’ Tax: Do I drop a versatile midfielder to carry a 6’5” target man just in case I desperately need to hoof the ball into the box in the 89th minute?
- The Glass Ankles Tax: Do I carry direct positional cover for my world-class playmaker just because he sneezes and pulls a hamstring every three weeks?
I don’t actually sit there for ten minutes paralyzed; I just get incredibly frustrated. My options are artificially limited, which directly hurts the thing I love most in the game: giving young prospects a spot on the bench so they can develop. Pre-match squad selection stops feeling like football management: it feels like being a highly stressed HR manager.
Friction Bottleneck 2: Moving the Goalposts (The Belgian Playoff Nightmare in FM24)
My ADHD brain thrives on clear momentum, predictable milestones, and tangible rewards for effort.
Nowhere was the disruption of that reward loop more severe for me than managing in the Belgian Pro League in FM24:
[30-Game Regular Season] -> [HALVE POINTS / RESET MOMENTUM] -> [Mini-League Split] -> [High-Stakes Playoff Matches]
- I battle through a grueling 30-game regular season to build a hard-earned 7-point lead.
- The game abruptly cuts my points in half (rounding up or down).
- The league splits into Championship, European, and Relegation mini-leagues.
- I am forced to play another 6 to 10 high-stress matches against the absolute best teams, followed by bizarre one-off playoff brackets for European tickets.
Why Points Halving Kills My Vibe
When the goalposts keep moving, my brain immediately cancels its dopamine subscription. I earned 30 games of hard-fought dominance, and the system just arbitrarily stole half my cushion.
But the biggest issue is what it does to the pacing. Instead of a clean finish, the season artificially drags on. Because these final 10 playoff matches are so incredibly high-stakes, I can’t afford to rotate my squad or give my beloved youth players any minutes. It completely takes the pace out of the game, kills my momentum, and I often hit Quit to Desktop instead of Continue simply because the season suddenly feels like an exhausting slog.
(Note: While Belgian football eventually voted to abandon this playoff structure in real life, vanilla FM24 remains permanently locked into this fatigue-inducing format without mods.)
The Solutions: Restoring Tactical Flow in FM24 & FM26
To stop myself from going insane, I built two dedicated database modifications:
Vanilla FM: Restricted Benches + Convoluted Rules = Mental Fatigue & Broken Momentum
Modded FM: 12-Man Benches + Streamlined Tables = Unbroken Momentum & Flow State
Project 1: FM26 Expanded Bench Mod Collection
For Football Manager 2026, I engineered a comprehensive Steam Workshop collection standardizing modern matchday flexibility across Europe.
- 💺 12-Man Benches: Full 12-substitute benches across league and cup competitions.
- 🔄 Standard Rules: 5 substitutions permitted across 3 stoppage windows (excluding halftime).
- ⏱️ Extra Time Protection: 1 additional substitute allowed if cup matches enter extra time.
- 🌍 12 Major European Leagues Covered: Austria, Belgium, Denmark, England, France, Germany, Greece, Norway, Portugal, Scotland, Sweden, and Switzerland.

Project 2: FM24 Belgium No Playoffs + 12 Subs
For players continuing dedicated long-term careers in FM24, this database file completely overhauls the Belgian football pyramid into a clean, traditional league structure.
- 🏆 Classic 18-Team Single Table: Standard 34-match round-robin season with zero points halving and zero playoff bloat.
- ⚡ Pacing Restored: A streamlined competition with fewer games to keep the pace high and the momentum going.
- 📉 Direct & Clear Relegation: Bottom 3 teams are directly relegated to the Challenger Pro League. Simple, transparent, and lethal.
- 💺 12-Man Subs Bench: Expanded from 9 to 12 seats, fully resolving pre-match selection fatigue.
- 💰 Recalibrated Finances & Scheduling: Prize money, TV broadcast rights, and winter break rhythms rebalanced across all 34 matchdays.

Why This Actually Matters
Modifying these rules does not make Football Manager easier for me. The AI managers receive the exact same 12-man bench benefits, ensuring the playing field remains perfectly level. My tactical instructions still dictate the outcome on the pitch, and I still need to manage wage structures, scouting networks, and angry players.
What it does is eliminate the absolute headache of pointless admin work:
- Zero-Guilt Youth Rotation: With 12 bench seats, I can name every positional replacement and still bring 2 or 3 young academy prospects. When I lead 3-0 in the 65th minute, I bring on the wonderkids without having sacrificed my tactical safety net. Getting to watch those young players develop is the best part of the game for me, and this mod finally lets me do it stress-free.
- Unbroken Seasonal Momentum: In a single-table format, every win awards a clean 3 points. When I build a lead, it belongs to me. The finish line remains visible, enabling me to finish a full 34-match season in a couple of focused gaming sessions without burning out on an artificial playoff slog.
Because at the end of the day, playing FM should be about testing my tactics and watching my youth academy flourish, not fighting the UI.
